Waiting for Physical Therapy Can Be Costly

By Dr. Sean Wells, DPT, PT, OCS, ATC/L, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, CNPT, Cert-DN

Recently we had a client reach out to our practice looking for PT for her husband. He had had a stroke and was discharged from Brooks Inpatient rehab in Jacksonville. Upon returning to his Naples’ home his wife was diligent to ask for ongoing physical therapy, as he still needed help with walking, transferring, and activities of daily living. To the patient’s wife surprise the local PT clinics could not see her husband for over a month!!! Recovery after a stroke is pegged to continued and ongoing therapy as the brain is still neuroplastic. Fortunately for this couple they found our practice and we were able to help them within days of calling.

Delaying physical therapy treatment can have several costs, including:

  1. Worsening of the condition: If a person delays seeking physical therapy treatment, their condition may worsen, leading to more pain, discomfort, and functional limitations. In some cases, the condition may become more severe and require more intensive or invasive treatments.

  2. Longer recovery time: Delaying physical therapy treatment can also prolong the recovery time, as the condition may progress and become more challenging to treat.

  3. Increased healthcare costs: Delaying physical therapy treatment can lead to increased healthcare costs, as more invasive or extensive treatments may be required to manage the condition.

  4. Decreased quality of life: The pain and functional limitations associated with a condition can impact a person's quality of life, making it more difficult to perform daily activities, work, or participate in recreational activities.

Overall, seeking timely physical therapy treatment can help prevent the progression of a condition, reduce pain and discomfort, improve functional outcomes, and decrease healthcare costs.
